As the peak of the holiday gift-buying season approaches and more people are ordering online, UPs and FedEx are busy moving packages to homes throughout the city. Many of these consumers are working when these packages are being dropped on their door step, and these items are left unattended for hours. This is easy picking for wandering thieves. Some thieves follow U.P.S. and FedEx trucks along their routes and nab the gifts, while others simply drive through residential neighborhoods looking for packages.

Health Tip of the Week

Holiday Stress Reality

Most families have challenges, and many families struggle this time of the year trying to live up to an idealized version of the holidays. Here are some suggestions for trying to deal with holiday stress:

Be realistic. If family members or friends have locked horns for most of the year, it is not reasonable to think that on one day all will be forgiven.

Give of yourself. The best gift is not a toy, a trinket or a thing. It is the gift of our presence. It is the gift of our listening. It is the gift of our "being there."

Take care of yourself. We need to take care of our bodies by getting enough exercise and sleep and by eating a healthy diet. We also need to protect our spirit, knowing when to draw a line in the sand and say, "no, thank you for the opportunity but I will not be able to participate." If we give and give, there is nothing left to give.

Winter Weather: Take Steps

Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with extreme cold-weather conditions. By preparing your home and car in advance for winter emergencies, and by observing safety precautions during times of extremely cold weather, you can reduce the risk of weather-related health problems.

Before a storm, plan ahead. Check out and print the Winter Weather Checklist so you're ready when a storm hits.

Health Tip of the Week

Good Quality Health Care does not Happen Automatically

To get good quality care, you need to be informed and involved. After a medical visit, you may want to learn more about your health condition and treatment.

  • Getting more information can help you understand issues involved in your care and things you can do to help recover as quickly as possible.
  • If you have decisions to make about your treatment, learning more can help you make decisions that are right for you. Depending on your situation, you might be able to find information that tells about scientific research that has been done to find out which types of treatment work best for your condition.

Here are other suggestions for finding the information you need:

  • Ask your doctor or other health professional for advice on where you should look to get more information about your health condition or treatment choices.
  • Check with your health plan. Call Member Services at your health plan and ask for information on your condition.

Health Tip of the Week
Whenever you start new medication or treatment, watch carefully for possible side effects or other problems - it can be hard to know how your body will respond. For your safety, keep a careful watch on your health during the hours and days after you start the medication or treatment.
  • Don’t hesitate to call your doctor’s office with any questions or concerns you may have. If you notice any new symptoms or problems, be sure to let your doctor know right away.
Even if you are feeling a lot better after a few days, make sure to follow through with the full course of treatment. Don’t make changes in your treatment or stop a recommended treatment without first talking with your doctor.

H Health Tip of the Week
There are those special times—like Halloween—when it’s fine to enjoy a sugary treat (or two). That’s because when you eat right most days, an occasional splurge is no biggie. That’s not to say you should scarf down handfuls of the kiddies’ stash or the office leftovers. Just keep in mind your calorie intake and limit portions.
  • Brach’s Candy Corn - Each piece of the pumpkin-shaped mellowcreme version has 28 calories
  • Hershey’s Kisses - A traditional Kiss has 22 calories. The pumpkin-spice flavor adds just one more calorie to the mix
  • Reese’s Pieces - The favorite of E.T. and extraterrestrials everywhere, one fun-sized pouch contain about 70 calories
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups - This classic, 80-year-old treat turns into a 90-calorie pumpkin at Halloween. One regular peanut butter cup is 105 calories
  • Pez Candy - The pastel-colored candy inside the dispenser is only 35 calories per roll
  • Snickers - A fun-size version of the U.S.'s best-selling candy bar containing the traditional chocolate, nougat, peanuts, and caramel has only 71 calories. The pumpkin-shaped Halloween special has 90 calories
  • Tootsie Rolls - Tootsie Rolls are already made in sizes perfect for Halloween bags. One piece: 23 calories
  • Nestle Crunch - Each 1.2-ounce piece has 170 calories and a fun size bar has 60 calories
  • Mike & Ike - The Halloween version of this popular chewy, fruity candy is called Mummy Mix. Each piece has only 6 calories, but a serving size of 23 pieces packs 140 calories
  • Nestle Butter Finger - A Halloween pumpkin two-pack has 160 calories while the "fun size" kids will hopefully find in their treat bags has 85 calories.
  • Nestle Baby Ruth - The peanuts, caramel, and chocolate-flavored nougat in this 90-year-old candy bar come in a 52-calorie fun size at Halloween

Spoke to resident about security concerns around his home.

Walk in medical care, no transport

Fire truck training with Jaws Of Life, driving and repair work

Checked a loose boat that was tied up

Assisted the Community Center weight training program with a lock out

Special Attention to several locations around the island

Safety tip.

Halloween is just around the corner so this is a reminder to prepare in advance. This tip is directed toward the homeowners that will be hosting many trick or treaters, so I’m going to break this down for you "old school."
The ultimatum "trick or treat" given by children who call on houses to solicit gifts at Halloween alone should be the first clue.
Trick or Treat does not mean a "gift in exchange for a prayer for the dead", anymore. It means give me a treat or I'll be back with a few friends with a little trick of my own. Now for those of you who like to hand out popcorn balls, sticky candy apples or fruit; you've moved yourself to the top of the "Will visit later list" The "my porch light is off so don't come here " homes are also on the fast track to the list.
So in short if you provide a reasonable treat of sugar substance you should be ok. If you plan on being gone or hiding out just leave a bowl of approved goodies on the steps. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Safety tip.

One thing learned from the recent earth quake was how quickly the 911 system was overwhelmed. Within minutes all available 911 emergency lines were filled and backed up. This can be very dangerous to those with real emergencies! Within minutes TV and radio stations had updates about the quake. We need to remember that 911 is not an information hotline or gossip hub. Chances are pretty good that if you heard a noise from your house that sounded like it ejected your furnace through the roof, your not the only one... So check the furnace if its still there relax and watch the news, if its gone and you can see the sky from the basement call 911.

Health Tip of the Week

Weight Wise - Tube Blobs

Researchers have found that men who watch more than three hours of television a day are twice as likely to be obese, compared to those who watch less than an hour a day. The same relationship was found with children. The answer? Turn off the tube and get physical.

Health Tip of the Week

How Much is Enough Protein?

We all need protein—but most Americans eat enough, and some eat more than they need. How much is enough? Most people, ages 9 and older, should eat 5 to 7 ounces of protein foods each day.
What counts as an ounce of protein foods? 1 ounce lean meat, poultry, or seafood; 1 egg; ¼ cup cooked beans or peas; ½ ounce nuts or seeds; or 1 tablespoon peanut butter.
Protein foods include both animal (meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs) and plant (beans, peas, soy products, nuts, and seeds) sources.
