Health Tip of the Week

Holiday Stress Reality

Most families have challenges, and many families struggle this time of the year trying to live up to an idealized version of the holidays. Here are some suggestions for trying to deal with holiday stress:

Be realistic. If family members or friends have locked horns for most of the year, it is not reasonable to think that on one day all will be forgiven.

Give of yourself. The best gift is not a toy, a trinket or a thing. It is the gift of our presence. It is the gift of our listening. It is the gift of our "being there."

Take care of yourself. We need to take care of our bodies by getting enough exercise and sleep and by eating a healthy diet. We also need to protect our spirit, knowing when to draw a line in the sand and say, "no, thank you for the opportunity but I will not be able to participate." If we give and give, there is nothing left to give.

Winter Weather: Take Steps

Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with extreme cold-weather conditions. By preparing your home and car in advance for winter emergencies, and by observing safety precautions during times of extremely cold weather, you can reduce the risk of weather-related health problems.

Before a storm, plan ahead. Check out and print the Winter Weather Checklist so you're ready when a storm hits.
