Remember that it is winter in Maine. You MUST clear your windows and windshield of snow/ice before you operate your vehicle. It does not matter that you are on the Island and 'just driving to the boat'. Maine state laws apply here, just as they do on the mainland.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 20, 2013
Looking for the Perfect Gift for Spot? How About a New Dog License
Portland dog owners are reminded to license their dogs
PORTLAND, Maine: Starting with the New Year, Portland resident dog owners are required, pursuant to Maine law, to have all dogs six months of age or older licensed. Dog licenses are issued for a calendar year and current ones will expire December 31, 2013. A dog license can be obtained from the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Renewals and new registrations are also available online at https://www.informe.org/dog_license/begin.shtml or through the mail.  Call 874-8610 for more details.

To license a dog, the dog owner should provide a current State of Maine Rabies Certificate. If the dog has been spayed or neutered, the dog owner should also bring in proof of neutering such as a previous license or written verification of neutering from a veterinarian the first time a dog is licensed.
Fees for dog licenses are:
Spayed or neutered - $6.00
Not spayed or neutered - $11.00
Late fee $25.00 (per dog) applies after 1/31/14

Health Tip of the Week
Holiday Treats May Harm Teeth
Cookies, candy and sweet holiday beverages all have at least one main ingredient in common: sugar. Sugar's negative effect on teeth has been well documented. Why is sugar so bad for your teeth? It mixes with bacteria in the sticky plaque that constantly forms on teeth to produce acid that attacks tooth enamel. The stickiness of that plaque keeps those harmful acids against the teeth, which contributes to tooth decay.
“Try to enjoy holiday treats in moderation, and if you find yourself overindulging, perhaps spend some extra time flossing and brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste,” said Shannon Mills, DDS, Vice President for Professional Relations and Science at Northeast Delta Dental.
When you do indulge your holiday sweet tooth, it is best to enjoy goodies as part of, or immediately following, a meal, rather than snacking on treats throughout the day. Another good tip is to stick to one small serving of your favorite drink or snack and to follow up by swishing some water in your mouth. Chew sugar–free gum, or brush soon after finishing to wash away some of the sticky sugar residue.

With the predicted Ice Storm coming in-remember to have water and  non-perishable foods on hand, as well as gas for the generator or wood for the stove. Any snow that hasn't been removed from the roof needs to be raked off before the heavy rain hits. Keep an eye on your neighborhood too, with the deep cold leaving and the warmer air moving in we may see frozen pipes thawing out and bursting.

With a few snow storms behind us we are seeing cars being left on the street during the parking bans and very few hydrants being shoveled out by homeowners-In an emergency, stopping to shovel a hydrant before hooking up a line to put out a fire eats up precious time. In addition to wearing light colored clothing when walking at dusk or after dark, please remember to have all members of your group walking with you go together to ONE side of the road. Splitting up and having cars weave in and out of a group is less than safe..

I have spoken with several Islanders recently about their vehicles. If you are not using your car or it is broken down please remember to move it out of the street and sidewalk area. That goes for Boats, trailers and any other large object that would be in the way of the snow plows. Remember: if there is a snow ban in Portland there is a snow ban here on Peaks. Do not leave your cars in the street during parking bans- and after the parking ban is finished remember to move your car so Public works can clean up the parking lots as well...

CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS CAN SAVE A LIFE Bookmark and Share

November 17, 2013

Install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms inside your home to provide early warning of accumulating CO. CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each separate sleeping area. If bedrooms are spaced apart, each area will need a CO alarm. Test CO alarms at least once a month and replace CO alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Remember that it is getting dark earlier-we are seeing a lot of people walking and riding bikes that are wearing dark clothes. Use caution when you are coming and going from the ferry-there are very few street lights to illuminate the area and folks wearing dark clothes blend in very well. Reflective gear and/or light colored clothing will make you stand out.

Please keep in mind that you should exercise caution when making internet or door-to-door sales purchases. There have been door to door "meat salesman" in rural Maine recently. While this shouldn't make it's way out to Peaks Island, keep in mind with door to door sellers that Transient sellers licenses are required and they need to be registered with the City. If it seems too good a deal to be true--it most likely is. I've attached a link for our seniors as well: http://www.ncpc.org/topics/by-audience/seniors

My Firefighter partner Lt Wallace and I have driven around the Island quite a bit together as he is familiarizing himself with the area. We are both still noticing that there are many homes without clearly visible house numbers. In the event of an emergency it is extremely important to have a house number visible so we can easily locate you. I would also like to remind everyone that if you are in need of help (emergency or not) the fastest route to get us is by calling 911 on a land line or 874-8575 or 874-8574 from a cell phone. That will get you to a dispatcher who will take down your information and they will then contact us directly.

Health Tip of the Week
Fruits and Vegetables
"Eat your fruits and vegetables." You've likely heard this statement since childhood. Research shows why it is good advice:
  • Healthy diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.
  • Fruits and vegetables also provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health.
  • Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories and are filling.
Not sure how many fruits and vegetables you should be eating each day?

Rules of the Road – Bicycling on the Road
Bicycles in many States are considered vehicles, and cyclists have the same rights and the same responsibilities to follow the rules of the road as motorists. When riding, always:
  • Go With the Traffic Flow. Ride on the right in the same direction as other vehicles. Go with the flow – not against it.

  • Obey All Traffic Laws. A bicycle is a vehicle and you’re a driver. When you ride in the street, obey all traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.

  • Yield to Traffic When Appropriate. Almost always, drivers on a smaller road must yield (wait) for traffic on a major or larger road. If there is no stop sign or traffic signal and you are coming from a smaller roadway (out of a driveway, from a sidewalk, a bike path, etc.), you must slow down and look to see if the way is clear before proceeding. This also means yielding to pedestrians who have already entered a crosswalk.

  • Be Predictable. Ride in a straight line, not in and out of cars. Signal your moves to others.

  • Stay Alert at All Times. Use your eyes AND ears. Watch out for potholes, cracks, wet leaves, storm grates, railroad tracks, or anything that could make you lose control of your bike. You need your ears to hear traffic and avoid dangerous situations; don’t wear a headset when you ride.

  • Look Before Turning. When turning left or right, always look behind you for a break in traffic, then signal before making the turn. Watch for left- or right-turning traffic.

  • Watch for Parked Cars. Ride far enough out from the curb to avoid the unexpected from parked cars (like doors opening, or cars pulling out).
