Safety tip.

Halloween is just around the corner so this is a reminder to prepare in advance. This tip is directed toward the homeowners that will be hosting many trick or treaters, so I’m going to break this down for you "old school."

The ultimatum "trick or treat" given by children who call on houses to solicit gifts at Halloween alone should be the first clue.

Trick or Treat does not mean a "gift in exchange for a prayer for the dead", anymore. It means give me a treat or I'll be back with a few friends with a little trick of my own. Now for those of you who like to hand out popcorn balls, sticky candy apples or fruit; you've moved yourself to the top of the "Will visit later list" The "my porch light is off so don't come here " homes are also on the fast track to the list.

So in short if you provide a reasonable treat of sugar substance you should be ok. If you plan on being gone or hiding out just leave a bowl of approved goodies on the steps. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Safety tip.

One thing learned from the recent earth quake was how quickly the 911 system was overwhelmed. Within minutes all available 911 emergency lines were filled and backed up. This can be very dangerous to those with real emergencies! Within minutes TV and radio stations had updates about the quake. We need to remember that 911 is not an information hotline or gossip hub. Chances are pretty good that if you heard a noise from your house that sounded like it ejected your furnace through the roof, your not the only one... So check the furnace if its still there relax and watch the news, if its gone and you can see the sky from the basement call 911.

Responded to City Point Landing for the report of an unknown white substance discharging from the storm drain. May be related to the Water District testing.

Medical transport to Maine Medical Center for a possible broken leg.

Found purse returned to out of state owner.

Medical tip. If you suspect that you or a loved one has a broken bone please report it as soon as possible! A delayed response to this injury can be very dangerous to your health, resulting in possible increased pain ,internal bleeding and clotting, permanent disfigurement from healing wrong and at the very least a delayed recovery period.

Safety tip.

Please be involved in your community. Talk to each other and identify older members who might need a little extra assistance during the cold winter months. If power outages occur for extended periods of time make contact with those who might need help. All to often people are to proud to ask for help but may except a warm meal or just nice company.

Today is my last day stationed on the Island for the summer. I have enjoyed working out here again and was pleased to see many positive changes. I would like to thank all of the veteran and new volunteer fire fighters for your service to the island and for the times you responded to calls to back me up. The tomato is late summers’ most cherished and delicious produce pick, not to mention a nutritious and versatile choice as well. One medium tomato contains only 25 calories and provides a good source of both vitamin C and vitamin A, nutrients important for skin health and immune health.

Chunk Fresh Tomato Salsa - Serves 6

1 small red onion, coarsely chopped
1 medium green bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1 small bunch fresh parsley, stems removed
2 large tomatoes
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
salt (optional)
black pepper, ground (optional)

In a food processor, combine the onion, bell pepper, and parsley leaves and process for 10 seconds, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Process until the mixture is finely chopped.
Cut the tomatoes crosswise in half and squeeze out most of the juice and seeds. Chop the tomatoes coarsely, then add to the vegetables in the processor. Pulse several times to make a coarse puree that contains little bits of onion and tomato. Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and stir in the vinegar and lemon juice.
In a small skillet, toast the cumin over low heat, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes, or just until the cumin starts to smoke. Stir into the salsa and season with salt and black pepper, if desired. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. (Can be kept in the refrigerator up to 1 week.)

Dental Health for Infants

Infants should see a dentist by age one-year old for an oral screening to be sure there are no problems. Good oral health depends on parents knowing how to take care of their young children’s teeth. A baby never should be put to bed with a bottle. If an infant has already developed this habit, then put only plain water in the bottle and end the habit quickly. Sippy cups should be used only at meal times and not carried around. When teeth are constantly bathed in liquids that contain sugar in them (juice, milk etc.), then tooth decay can develop quickly.
