Health Tip of the Week
It's Time to Start Thinking about Ticks: Protect yourself from tick bites – avoid areas with a lot of ticks
  • Ticks prefer wooded and bushy areas with high grass and a lot of leaf litter. These are areas to avoid.
  • Take extra precautions in May, June, and July. This is when ticks that transmit Lyme disease are most active.
  • If you do enter a tick area, walk in the center of the trail to avoid contact with overgrown grass, brush, and leaf litter.

Health Tip of the Week
What is Iron Deficiency Anemia?
Iron deficiency anemia occurs when your body doesn't have enough iron. Iron is important because it helps you get enough oxygen throughout your body. Your body uses iron to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a part of your red blood cells and carries oxygen through your body. If you don't have enough iron, your body makes fewer and smaller red blood cells and if your body has less hemoglobin you can't get enough oxygen.
You may not notice the symptoms of anemia, because it develops slowly and the symptoms may be mild. In fact you may not notice them until your anemia gets worse. Symptoms in adults include: Feeling dizzy, weak and tire more easily; being grumpy or cranky; have headaches, looking very pale; shortness of breath and having trouble concentrating.
If you think you have anemia, see your physician and don't try to treat yourself as it may be caused by a serious problem. If it is recommended that you take iron pills, make sure you don't take them with milk, caffeine, foods with high fiber or antacids. You can prevent anemia by eating foods that contain iron every day. Iron-rich foods include meats, vegetables, and whole grains such as iron-fortified cereals.

Health Tip of the Week
Get a Little Sunshine in Your Life
Your body activates vitamin D from the sun faster and more effectively than it soaks it up from food and supplements. But you know the trouble with that: Sunlight is great for growing plants and yellowing newspapers, but it leaves your skin vulnerable to skin cancer and wrinkles, and inflammation from burns needlessly uses up your stem cells (better to have them to repair things like your heart, kidney, or brain).
So what to do? Get some sun, but only a little bit. Just 10 to 20 minutes of summer sun gets you the D you need for the day (in much of North America, winter sun isn't strong enough to get D production going). Or use sunscreen and rely on vitamin D supplements. Take 1,000 international units (IU) of D3 every day if you're under age 60 and 1200 IU a day if you're over 60.

Health Tip of the Week
Who is Likely to Have Pre-diabetes?
People with pre-diabetes have blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. They are at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, including heart disease, and stroke. Without lifestyle changes to improve their health, 15% to 30% of people with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.
People with the following risk factors are more likely to develop pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes:
  • 45 years of age or older.
  • Overweight.
  • Have a parent with diabetes.
  • Have a sister or brother with diabetes.
  • Family background is African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander.
  • Developed diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes), or gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more.
  • Physically active less than three times a week.
Pre-diabetes is a serious health condition yet the vast majority of people with pre-diabetes do not know they have the condition, according to CDC research. People whose test results indicate they have pre-diabetes should have their blood glucose levels checked again in 6 months to 1 year.

Health Tip of the Week
Get Your Vitamin K - Kale is the New Spinach
Kale is one of the healthiest veggies you can put on your plate. One serving, which contains just 30 calories, provides a day's worth of vitamin C, twice the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, and nearly seven times the recommended amount of vitamin K. Add a sizable dose of minerals and healthy fatty acids, and you've got yourself a nutrition powerhouse. But due to its sturdy texture and slightly bitter flavor, kale can be more challenging to cook with than some other greens. Don't be intimidated!
Acorn Squash and Kale Over Penne
  • 6 cups (1-inch) cubed peeled acorn squash (about 2 medium squash)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 cups (about 5 ounces) coarsely chopped trimmed kale
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 4 cups hot cooked penne
  • 2/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1. Place squash in a casserole dish with 1/4 cup water. Cover with plastic wrap. Microwave 7 minutes on HIGH or until tender.
    2. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add garlic; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add kale and broth; cover. Cook 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover; cook 1 minute. Stir in the salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir in squash and pasta, tossing gently. Sprinkle with cheese.

    Health Tip of the Week

February is National Children's Dental Health Month & City Dental Plan Reminder

    Tooth Friendly Foods for Kids

A balanced diet helps your child build a healthy body—and that includes strong teeth. It also helps keep little gums in good shape. On the other hand, eating too many sugars and starches can increase your child’s risk of tooth decay. Below are some tips on helping your child make smart food choices:

    • Serve your child a variety of healthful foods. Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and milk and dairy products. Also include protein foods, such as lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts.
    • Notice when your child eats foods with sugar or starch in them. Sugar is found not only in sweets, but also in fruits, some vegetables, most milk products, and many processed foods—even some that don’t taste sweet. Starch is found in breads, crackers, pasta, and many snack foods. The goal is not to cut out all these foods. Instead, aim to choose and use them wisely.
    • Serve sugary or starchy foods with a meal rather than by themselves. Since more saliva is released during a meal, it helps wash food particles off the teeth. This reduces the chance for cavities.
    • Limit the number of snack times during the day. When your child does snack, offer him or her nutritious foods. Kid-pleasing examples include cheese, raw veggies, plain yogurt, or a piece of fruit.
    • Read food labels. Avoid foods and drinks with lots of added sugar, such as soft drinks, candy, and other sweets. Also skip the high-starch, low-nutrition snacks, such as chips.
    • Beware of sticky foods, such as chewy candy. These foods are not easily washed away by a drink or saliva. As a result, they have high cavity-causing potential.

    Health Tip of the Week
7 Tips to a Better Sleep
You're not doomed to toss and turn every night. Consider simple tips for better sleep, from setting a sleep schedule to including physical activity in your daily routine.
    • Stick to a sleep schedule - Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends, holidays and days off. Being consistent reinforces your body's sleep-wake cycle and helps promote better sleep at night.
    • Pay attention to what you eat and drink - Don't go to bed either hungry or stuffed. Your discomfort might keep you up.
    • Create a bedtime ritual - Do the same things each night to tell your body it's time to wind down.
    • Get comfortable - Create a room that's ideal for sleeping. Often this means cool, dark and quiet.
    • Limit daytime naps - Long daytime naps can interfere with nighttime sleep — especially if you're struggling with insomnia or poor sleep quality at night. If you choose to nap during the day, limit yourself to about 10 to 30 minutes and make it during the midafternoon.
    • Include physical activity in your daily routine - Regular physical activity can promote better sleep, helping you to fall asleep faster and to enjoy deeper sleep. Timing is important, though. If you exercise too close to bedtime, you might be too energized to fall asleep.
    • Manage stress - When you have too much to do — and too much to think about — your sleep is likely to suffer. To help restore peace to your life, consider healthy ways to manage stress. Start with the basics, such as getting organized, setting priorities and delegating tasks.
Know when to contact your doctor - Nearly everyone has an occasional sleepless night, but if you often have trouble sleeping, contact your doctor. Identifying and treating any underlying causes can help you get the better sleep you deserve.

    Health Tip of the Week
    Eat Fruit
Eating fruit provides health benefits - people who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Fruits provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of your body.
Still keeping that promise to yourself to eat better this year? Here are some general tips to help you get some fruit into your diet:
  • Keep a bowl of whole fruit on the table, counter, or in the refrigerator.
  • Refrigerate cut-up fruit to store for later.
  • Buy fresh fruits in season when they may be less expensive and at their peak flavor.
  • Buy fruits that are dried, frozen, and canned (in water or 100% juice) as well as fresh, so that you always have a supply on hand.
  • Consider convenience when shopping. Try pre-cut packages of fruit (such as melon or pineapple chunks) for a healthy snack in seconds. Choose packaged fruits that do not have added sugars.

I know that there was an email, on the list-serve today, about dogs being allowed to run at large. These dogs were not accompanied by any owners-they were unattended and running free. I would like to remind all Island residents and visitors that there is a leash law. You cannot have your dog off leash unless you are in a city dog park--and there is not a dog park on Peaks!! We do not have a holding facility on Peaks for dogs. If we cannot reunite you with your dog, the holding facility is at the Westbrook Animal Refuge League. You will not only have to retrieve your pet, you will be summonsed for allowing a dog to run at large. Please keep your dogs on a leash or supervised in your yard. If you see this occurring take the time to give us a call-we cannot take action hours or days later.

    Health Tip of the Week
    Eat More Breakfast
If you eat just a bagel and coffee, you get a quick stimulant from the caffeine and quick energy from the carbs - a recipe for a crash. Instead, go for a mix of unrefined carbs (for fast energy) plus lean protein and healthy fat (which take longer to digest, giving you more staying power.) Think scrambled egg in a whole-grain tortilla or oatmeal topped with nuts.
