Health Tip of the Week

Weight Wise - Tube Blobs

Researchers have found that men who watch more than three hours of television a day are twice as likely to be obese, compared to those who watch less than an hour a day. The same relationship was found with children. The answer? Turn off the tube and get physical.

Health Tip of the Week

How Much is Enough Protein?

We all need protein—but most Americans eat enough, and some eat more than they need. How much is enough? Most people, ages 9 and older, should eat 5 to 7 ounces of protein foods each day.
What counts as an ounce of protein foods? 1 ounce lean meat, poultry, or seafood; 1 egg; ¼ cup cooked beans or peas; ½ ounce nuts or seeds; or 1 tablespoon peanut butter.
Protein foods include both animal (meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs) and plant (beans, peas, soy products, nuts, and seeds) sources.

Tune Up
Research during the last 20 years has led to the knowledge that there are multiple benefits of using music to enhance the exercise experience. A study of college students in an aerobics class found that 97 percent felt that the use of music aided their physical performance, according to The Effects of Music on Exercise. The music was motivation to continue the activity and provided something to focus on rather than the task at hand.

Peaks Island Shift Log 9-4-12  Officer Rose

Officer Rose On duty with Firefighters Weeks, Carmichael and Anderson

Met boats and patrolled throughout the day and evening.

Made minor repairs to the station with the Firefighter.

Assisted Probation and Parol with locating a client.

Assisted citizen with her dog who locked himself in a bedroom.

Safety tip.

Please be involved in your community. Talk to each other and identify older members who might need a little extra assistance during the cold winter months. If power outages occur for extended periods of time make contact with those who might need help. All to often people are to proud to ask for help but may except a warm meal or just nice company.

Today is my last day stationed on the Island for the summer. I have enjoyed working out here again and was pleased to see many positive changes. I would like to thank all of the veteran and new volunteer fire fighters for your service to the island and for the times you responded to calls to back me up. Please have a warm safe winter and feel free to contact me at the police station in town or e-mail me at danielr@portlandmaine.gov

Be nice to each other!

Health Tip of the Week
Got Tomatoes?
The tomato is late summers’ most cherished and delicious produce pick, not to mention a nutritious and versatile choice as well. One medium tomato contains only 25 calories and provides a good source of both vitamin C and vitamin A, nutrients important for skin health and immune health.
Chunk Fresh Tomato Salsa - Serves 6
1 small red onion, coarsely chopped
1 medium green bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1 small bunch fresh parsley, stems removed
2 large tomatoes
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
salt (optional)
black pepper, ground (optional)
In a food processor, combine the onion, bell pepper, and parsley leaves and process for 10 seconds, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Process until the mixture is finely chopped.
Cut the tomatoes crosswise in half and squeeze out most of the juice and seeds. Chop the tomatoes coarsely, then add to the vegetables in the processor. Pulse several times to make a coarse puree that contains little bits of onion and tomato. Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and stir in the vinegar and lemon juice.
In a small skillet, toast the cumin over low heat, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes, or just until the cumin starts to smoke. Stir into the salsa and season with salt and black pepper, if desired. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. (Can be kept in the refrigerator up to 1 week.)

Health Tip of the Week
Dental Health for Infants

Infants should see a dentist by age one-year old for an oral screening to be sure there are no problems. Good oral health depends on parents knowing how to take care of their young children’s teeth. A baby never should be put to bed with a bottle. If an infant has already developed this habit, then put only plain water in the bottle and end the habit quickly. Sippy cups should be used only at meal times and not carried around. When teeth are constantly bathed in liquids that contain sugar in them (juice, milk etc.), then tooth decay can develop quickly.

2130-A very Large thunder storm rolled through the island causing several trees to fall over or break. We received a called to central ave for a tree down on or near a house. We found a huge tree across power lines that barely missed a house but crushed a vehicle. CMP notified and responded.

2200-While on scene of the tree down a tip came in that the burglary suspects were seen in the area of Reed Ave. Officer Latarte and I responded and searched the area for several hours looking for the suspects. We used night vision, spotlights and heat sensing equipment to try and locate the suspects to no avail.

This is a delayed entry with follow-up from 8-19-12 pleas see that log for more information.

From the burglary at the Trefethen on the evening of 8-18-12 we were able to locate one of the suspects and an arrest was affected later in the day. At 1145 PM the other two suspects were located on the island looking for additional victims. Two more arrests were affected. All three were sent to the Long Creak Correctional Facility.

During an interview with one on the suspects, he stated that they were in fact Peaks Island on 8-17 and in the area of Reed Ave. looking for more houses to burglarize. He stated that because the police were so activity looking for them they got scared and worked their way back to the house where they were staying. It took them two hours to make it from Reed Ave. to their house because they had to hide from the police.

We also learned that they made entry to several locations on the island during daylight or early evening hours in the last few weeks. He stated that they would wait until the police were meeting a boat down front, and then enter a home looking for money and electronics. Please keep this in mine and be extra vigilant around these time as the police are required to try to meet every boat.

Safety tip.

If you have large trees in your yard or around your home, please have an expert inspect the tree to see if it's in good shape and not in danger of falling. Tonight was a reminder of how powerful storms can become and how a beautiful tree could become deadly in a matter of seconds.

***Some smoke detectors rely on just battery power, these types need to have the batteries changed more often that the AC/battery type. Just because the detector is new and came with a "new battery" doesn't mean its a charged battery. Be prepared to replace it if necessary.
***Please don't mess with the beavers that live on the island. As you can see from the video they will charge you if scared. Yon can try to climb up a tree to escape, but he'll just call his friends and chop it down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF1-DLAzwLM

***Three common themes to the attempted burglaries that we had today were; the houses were vacant, dark yards and no inside lights.
If you plan to be away, a good idea would be to have one of our island electricians install an outside motion detector light in the dark areas of your yard. Most of the time one quality motion sensing light can cover a large area. http://www.rabweb.com/productLines.php?majorGroup=STL
I addition to that, a timer placed on a lamp inside of the home will help deter unwanted thieves. Some examples of these can be found at http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/catalog/servlet/Search?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&keyword=light%20timers&Ns=None&Ntpr=1&Ntpc=1&selectedCatgry=SEARCH+ALL and

***Health Tip

Female Heart Attack Symptoms:

  1. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
  2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  4. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
  5. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

***Some women mistakenly think only crushing chest pain is a symptom of a heart attack and, therefore, delay seeking medical care.
If you have any of these signs, don’t wait more than five minutes before calling for help. Call 9-1-1 and get to a hospital right away.
