What Parents Can Do
Advice for Parents and Adults About How To Deal With Bullying
A big, tough kid stops a smaller kid on his way to school and threatens to hurt him unless he hands over his homework. The popular girls at school won't let anyone sit at their lunch table except their friends. These two bullying scenarios and others happen more often than most adults realize. Seventy-four percent of eight to 11-year-olds say teasing and bullying happen at their school. But what exactly is bullying?
Bullying is
·         Fighting, threatening, name-calling, teasing, or excluding someone repeatedly and over time
·         An imbalance of power, such as size or popularity
·         Physical, social, and emotional harm
·         Hurting another person to get something
Many parents don't think that bullying is as big a problem as bringing a weapon to school or drug use but its effects can be severe and long lasting. Every day, nearly 160,000 children miss school because they are scared of bullying, according to the National Education Association. Bullying doesn't only negatively affect its victims, but also the bullies themselves.
Kids who are bullied are more likely to
·         Do poorly in school
·         Have low self-esteem
·         Be depressed
·         Turn to violent behavior to protect themselves or get revenge on their bullies
Kids who bully are more likely to
·         Do poorly in school
·         Smoke and drink alcohol
·         Commit crimes in the future
Parents can play a central role to preventing bullying and stopping it when it happens. Here are a few things you can do.
·         Teach kids to solve problems without using violence and praise them when they do.
·         Give children positive feedback when they behave well to help their build self-esteem. Help give them the self-confidence to stand up for what they believe in.
·         Ask your children about their day and listen to them talk about school, social events, their classmates, and any problems they have.
·         Take bullying seriously. Many kids are embarrassed to say they have been bullied. You may only have one chance to step in and help.
·         If you see any bullying, stop it right away, even if your child is the one doing the bullying.
·         Encourage your child to help others who need it.
·         Don't bully your children or bully others in front of them. Many times kids who are bullied at home react by bullying other kids. If your children see you hit, ridicule, or gossip about someone else, they are also more likely to do so themselves.
·         Support bully prevention programs in your child's school. If your school doesn't have one, consider starting one with other parents, teachers, and concerned adults.
For more information on bullying, read the articles below and visit the Health Resources and Services Administration's Stop Bullying Now! Campaign.
When Your Child Is Bullied
Many kids are embarrassed to be bullied and may not tell their parents or another adult right away. If your child comes to you and asks for help with a bully, take it seriously. Many times, if kids aren't taken seriously the first time they ask for help, they don't ask again.
Even if your child doesn't turn to you for help, you can watch for these warning signs that he or she is being bullied. Kids who are bullied often experience
·         Withdrawal
·         A loss of friends
·         A drop in grades
·         A loss of interest in activities he or she previously enjoyed
·         Torn clothing
·         Bruises
·         A need for extra money or supplies
If you think your child is being bullied or if your child has told you that he or she is being bullied, you can help. Parents are often the best resource to build a child's self-confidence and teach him or her how to best solve problems. Here are a few ways you can help
·         Talk to your child's teacher about it instead of confronting the bully's parents. If the teacher doesn't act to stop the bullying, talk to the principal.
·         Teach your child nonviolent ways to deal with bullies, like walking away, playing with friends, or talking it out.
·         Help your child act with self-confidence. With him or her, practice walking upright, looking people in the eye, and speaking clearly.
·         Don't encourage your child to fight. This could lead to him or her getting hurt, getting in trouble, and beginning more serious problems with the bully.
·         Involve your child in activities outside of school. This way he or she can make friends in a different social circle.
Some children seem to be bullied all the time, while others rarely get picked on. Why do some kids seem to attract all of the bullies? Kids who are bullied often
·         Are different from other kids, whether by size, race, sexually, or have different interests
·         Seem weak, either physically or emotionally
·         Are insecure
·         Want approval
·         Won't tell on their bullies
When Your Child Is a Bully
It's hard for any parent to believe that their child is a bully, but sometimes it happens. But just because your child bullies doesn't mean that he or she will bully forever. Parents are one of the best resources to help their child stop bullying and start interacting positively with their classmates.
Your child may bully if, he or she
·         Lacks empathy and doesn't sympathize with others
·         Values aggression
·         Likes to be in charge
·         Is an arrogant winner and a sore loser
·         Often fights often with brothers and sisters
·         Is impulsive
What you can do to stop your child from bullying
·         Take it seriously. Don't treat bullying as a passing phase. Even if you're not worried about long-lasting effects on your child, another child is being hurt.
·         Talk to your child to find out why he or she is bullying. Often, children bully when they feel sad, angry, lonely, or insecure and many times major changes at home or school may bring on these feelings.
·         Help build empathy for others and talk to your child about how it feels to be bullied.
·         Ask a teacher or a school counselor if your child is facing any problems at school, such as if your child is struggling with a particular subject or has difficulty making friends. Ask them for advice on how you and your child can work through the problem.
·         Ask yourself if someone at home is bullying your child. Often, kids who bully are bullied themselves by a parent, family member, or another adult.

Facts About Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition where the upper chambers of the heart beat too rapidly and cause the lower chambers to pump the blood abnormally and ineffectively throughout the body.  If you notice the symptoms of AF (heart fluttering or pounding, fainting or dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, anxiety) you need to contact your physician - even if your symptoms go away.

Medication is most often prescribed to control heart rate and rhythm.  Whereas you generally don't die from an episode of AF, you can die from complications that result from having AF, such as stroke and heart failure.

Sometimes AF symptoms are continual and occasionally the symptoms go away on their own.  I you experience AF, get regular checkups.

We have responded to several calls for "bonfires" lately. Many of those calls have been cooking fires. The rules regarding open burning for the City of Portland are strict. You cannot have an open fire within the City of Portland-but you may have a small cooking fire -within an 3' enclosed circle and no higher than 2'. You need to have a water source when you have a cooking fire and you MUST extinguish the fire before you leave the area. A 5 gallon bucket is ideal for this if you do not have a charged garden hose. Please be aware of the area where you may choose to have your cooking fire-there are several homes on back shore that have become the victim of smoke from these fires regardless of their size-even a small fire can make it unbearable on a warm summer night when they open up their windows to catch a breeze and fill up with smoke.

Health Tip of the Week
Heed the Heat During Summer Workouts

People who exercise or play sports outdoors during the summer need to tak steps to avoid heat injury, especially heat stroke.

Exercise during the coolest time of the day.  Many people think the evening is the coolest time of day, but actually, it is early in the morning just before the sun rises. If your schedule will not accommodate an early morning workout, wait until at least 5 p.m.

Choose the right type of clothing.  Clothing choice is important. Wear light colors as they reflect light, and items made from moisture-wicking material, not cotton, which absorbs sweat and feels heavy when saturated. Also, wear as little clothing as possible.

Ease into outdoor summer activity. Acclimatization is how our bodies gradually adjust to the heat. Take it slow the first couple of weeks, gradually increasing the intensity of your workout -- but listen to your body. If you start feeling sick or dizzy, stop immediately to rest, cool down and hydrate.

Stay hydrated.  Drink water while you are active, but also, weigh yourself before you exercise outdoors, then again after you are done. Drink enough water to replace what you lost during your activity -- one pint of water for every pound you lose.

Use sun screen.  Numerous brands make light-feeling and sweat-resistant sport sun block formulas that won't run in your eyes.  If you have long hair, wear it up so that the sweat on your neck can better evaporate to keep you cool.

"Reggae Sunday" was busy-but not disorderly. The security detail kept matters well in hand-no issues any of the times we visited the area.

Health Tip of the Week
Salmonella in Eggs:  An Unwelcome Summer Visitor
Eggs and summer go together: deviled eggs, homemade ice cream, and potato salad. But, just a few hours outside of the refrigerator and your eggs can create lasting memories that you'd rather forget. This summer, make sure that eggs carrying Salmonella don't come to your next outing.  Salmonella can contaminate more than poultry and eggs. It sneaks into many other foods—ground beef, pork, tomatoes, sprouts—even peanut butter. Here are six tips to make eggs and other foods safer to eat.
  1. Like other perishable foods, keep eggs refrigerated at or below 40° F (4° C) at all times. Buy eggs only from stores or other suppliers that keep them refrigerated.
  2. Discard cracked or dirty eggs.
  3. Do not keep eggs or other foods warm or at room temperature for more than two hours.
  4. Refrigerate unused or leftover foods promptly.
  5. Avoid restaurant dishes made with raw or lightly cooked unpasteurized eggs. Although restaurants should use pasteurized eggs in any recipe containing raw or lightly cooked eggs --such as Hollandaise sauce or Caesar salad dressing—ask to be sure.
  6. Consider buying and using shell eggs and egg products that are pasteurized. These are available for purchase from certain stores and suppliers.

Many parents and children were swimming off the end of the dock on Welch St all day due to extreme heat and humid weather conditions. I spoke with multiple groups to remind them to not jump in the water when the ferry was arriving--the engines of the Machigonne (and all CBL boats) create a large wash that will likely pull you into the engines--no one wants to see that happen. If you or your guests go down front for a refreshing swim please remember to get out of the water when the boats pass House Island, don't climb on the DOT transfer bridge or pylons to jump off and the opportunity to swim there will still be an option. In past years when safety rules were not followed the dock was shut down to all foot traffic and swimming was prohibited.

Health Tip of the Week
Carbon Monoxide - A Silent Killer

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly gas that is difficult to detect because it is odorless and invisible.  As a result, it is known as 'the silent killer.'  According to the CDC, 450 people die and nearly 21,000 CO exposures occur each year. CO poisoning can be prevented by proper care and use of household equipment. CO alarms can provide early detection if CO leaks or accumulation occurs. Both are important for your safety.

A few problems with the ferry line-it was backed up a couple of times, but people made short order of closing some gaps in the line and it went pretty smoothly after a couple of interventions.

Despite the weather there was a good number of visitors to the Island-Jones Landing was fairly orderly and had Security managing the event outside very well.  There were still a number of cars parked illegally on Island Ave causing a problem for the car ferry line at the corner-they were tagged and were moved rather quickly by the owners in most cases.
