Facts About Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition where the upper chambers of the heart beat too rapidly and cause the lower chambers to pump the blood abnormally and ineffectively throughout the body.  If you notice the symptoms of AF (heart fluttering or pounding, fainting or dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, anxiety) you need to contact your physician - even if your symptoms go away.

Medication is most often prescribed to control heart rate and rhythm.  Whereas you generally don't die from an episode of AF, you can die from complications that result from having AF, such as stroke and heart failure.

Sometimes AF symptoms are continual and occasionally the symptoms go away on their own.  I you experience AF, get regular checkups.
