Use the sidewalks whenever possible. When walking in the road, be aware that you may not be visible to drivers-even when you are in a crosswalk -especially when stepping out between cars in the dark.

Health Tip of the Week
Prepare the Whole Family
This is a great time to evaluate how ready you are for an emergency.  Don't forget about the people who depend on you.  Are there children, older adults, people with disabilities, special medical needs or pets in your life?  Here are some suggestions for how you can be ready to help the people you care about during an emergency.
  • When building an emergency kit, include special medication, medical supplies, food and water for pets, and comfort items for children.  A favorite toy or blanket can go a long way to help calm nerves during a disaster.  Have a plan for how you would provide care if you were evacuated or had to shelter in place.  Share your emergency plans with those you care for and make sure they are prepared and know what to do in an emergency.
  • Talk to your neighbors about disasters in your area and how best to prepare and respond.  Reach out to older relatives and talk to them about their plan for a disaster.  Have a conversation with your kids about emergency preparedness and get them involved in your disaster plan in a way they can understand.
  • Talk to neighbors or coworkers about forming support networks.  A support network is a great way for people who are more vulnerable due to physical, medical, or other limitations to get extra assistance in an emergency.  Learn how you can help people around you during an emergency and make sure people around you are aware of additional help you may need.
  • The local chapter of the American Red Cross can provide more information about the kinds of natural disasters you need to be aware of in your area (hurricanes, wildfires, etc.). Often, the people who provide the most immediate and important help during a disaster are not trained medical or emergency response professionals, but simply people who were closest to the disaster and pitched in to help.  Take a first aid or disaster response training course and be ready in case that person is you! These courses, often no longer than a weekend, could make the difference in helping save someone's life after an emergency.

In the summer we try to make our vehicles as light as possible to conserve fuel, adding a few hundred pounds to our vehicles this time of year really is a good idea.. lightweight cars get stuck more often than heavy ones..

Peaks Island Health Center
87 Central Ave.
Hours: Monday and Thursday: 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM
Kitty Gilbert, Family Nurse Practitioner, provides care for all ages.
Please call either 766-2929 or 874-2466 for an appointment.
Holiday Schedule: Please note that Christmas and New Year’s Day will be celebrated on Thursdays this year. The Peaks Island Health Center will open on Monday 12/22/14 and Monday 12/29/14.
Vial of Life: What is the Vial of Life?
If a medical professional comes to your home to provide assistance when you are not able to communicate, it is enormously helpful for that responder to be informed of medical circumstances that may have contributed to your condition. The Vial of Life is a very brief medical history, encompassing your meds, your allergies, your general condition. The object is to have this list in a baggie, on your refrigerator, labeled with a decal for fast access by the medical professional, only. A secondary decal will be posted on a main entrance to notify the medical pro that this is available.
When you are critical, information is also critical.
The name: ‘Vial of Life’ is a throwback to days of yore, when people kept this info in a medicine vial inside their refrigerator. The Health Center has these packets available and will be collaborating with other groups on island for distribution.

Clean the snow off of your car before you drive it away from the snowdrift. A few windshield wipers have caught the load of snow sliding down the windshield-unfortunately they are not made for that and don't really withstand the weight and momentum of the ice and snow. Remember to shovel out your mailbox, entry doors-front and rear-as well as clearing a path to your oil/propane fills.

I found more than 20 cars in the 72 Hour Welch St lot that had been parked there since it snowed yesterday. Remember to move your car after each snowstorm-the Public works crew will not be able to effectively clean the snow from the lot if the cars are left there too long. We lose several parking spaces due to snow and ice build up each season.

Helping Someone Quit Smoking

If someone you know is trying to quit smoking, there’s a lot you can do to help.  Simply being supportive and available to lend an ear is a big part of the process.
Sometimes the best thing you can be is a sounding board for whenever a bad craving strikes.  Here are some tips to help make these transitions easier.

Helping Someone Decide to Quit
  • You can gently encourage someone who smokes to quit.  Think of your comments about smoking as only one event that moves that person toward quitting.
  • Start any discussion of quitting in a gentle way.
  • Let the person know why you want him or her to quit. Give the person reasons that are as important to him or her as they are to you. (Try "I want you to be with us for long time" rather than "I'm tired of cleaning your dirty ashtrays.")
  • One good way to begin is to mention a new treatment option you have heard or read about.
  • Make it short (less than 5 minutes).
  • Ask whether there is a way that you can help him or her quit.
  • Repeat your attempt every 6 to 12 months.

Health Tip of the Week

Top 10 Ways to Take Charge of Your Health and Health Plan Services

1.  Establish a relationship with a primary care physician - before you need one.  The more your doctor knows about you, the better care you are likely to receive when you're ill.  Be honest and thorough in talking with your doctor about your health, your lifestyle and your personal and family health history.

2.  Ask questions.  You have the right to ask your doctor what a procedure involves, how much it costs and if it's medically necessary.  Ask whether equally effective, less costly alternatives are available.

3.  Learn how to practice self-care.  More than 80% of all health problems can be cared for in the home.  You should know how to recognize common health problems, what to do when they occur, when and where to seek appropriate help, and how to prevent health problems from recurring.

4.  Check your Provider Directory. Make your health care provider participates in the network.  It's a good idea to call the provider's office for verification.

5.  Know your prescriptions.  Make sure you tell your doctor and pharmacist about all drugs prescribed to you, so they will know if a new drug may have possible unfavorable interactions with those you are taking.

6.  Use the Emergency Room for medical emergencies only.  Emergency department care is many times more costly than care provided in a doctors' office.  However, if you feel your health or life are in jeopardy, you should go to the ER immediately.

7.  Learn about your illness.  Ask your physician for information about special diets or physical activities that would be helpful.  If you are on medications, ask about possible side effects.

8.  Carefully read your Certificate of Coverage and Summary of Covered Benefits.  Know and understand your healthcare benefits.  If you're not sure a service or procedure is covered, refer to your benefits materials or call member services.

9.  Review bills carefully.  If you're in the hospital, have a friend or family member keep track of your tests, medications and supplies you use - or do it yourself if you feel up to it.  After you leave the hospital, ask for an itemized bill and compare the charges with your records.

10.  Live a healthy lifestyle.  Eat a sensible diet; wear your seat belt; obtain recommended preventive care; perform monthly breast or testicular self-exams; get enough sleep; don't smoke; exercise at least three times a week and if you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.

The Health Center Board's Communication Committee is working with MMP Family Practice and the Southern Maine Area Council on Aging to plan a workshop on "Advanced Care Planning", open to the Peaks community. We hope to schedule the presentation in November or early December. Details will be forthcoming on Island email lists and posters, as soon as they are available.
We are happy to let the community know that our partnership with MMC is going very well, indeed, with more and more Islanders using the Health Center for their primary care, and many relying on it for their urgent medical needs. This is very important as we look to the future, hoping that this relationship will work for our community for many years to come.
Please note that winter hours have begun: the Health Center will be open two days a week: Mondays and Thursdays. As always, on days the Health Center is closed, Health Center patients may be seen at Maine Medical Partners Family Practice on Congress St. by calling the same number

From Michelle Brown:

For those of you that are interested in what is going on with the Peaks Island raccoon population but could not make it to the informational meeting last night with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIFW) representatives, I am submitting this synopsis of the major points that were talked about at the meeting:
·         The representatives from DIFW were Peter Herring, the Game Warden for this area, and Corrie Sterns, a wildlife biologist knowledgeable about raccoon behavior and natural history,
 ·         Peaks Island has a healthy population of raccoons that do not appear to be carrying rabies or any other diseases,
 ·         Raccoons are native to Peaks Island and would make it to the Island on their own (they can swim) so it is not feasible or legal to rid the Island of all raccoons. They would just repopulate the Island naturally in the near future,
 ·         There are no natural predators of raccoons on the Island except for birds of prey that may take a baby raccoon. However, the greatest mortality factor of raccoons on the Island would be other raccoons because they are highly territorial and would kill other raccoons that are invading their territory,

·         If raccoons do become more numerous on the Island, they will not become more aggressive, we will just see more of them,
 ·         Raccoons are not strictly nocturnal. They can also be out during the day looking for food, especially if they have kits (baby raccoons) to feed,
 ·         There is some concern that the transfer station open dump containers may be providing food and attracting raccoons. This is an item that could be looked into further,
 ·         It is criminal offense to poison raccoons (or any other wildlife) in Maine. Poisoning is nondiscriminatory and could kill other animals such as dogs, cats, hawks, owls, etc.  It is also a very cruel, painful, and inhuman way to kill an animal,
 ·         Cats and dogs are not on a raccoon diet;
 ·         It is illegal to trap and move or trap and kill wildlife in Maine unless you are permitted to do so by the State. Also, discharging a gun on Peaks Island is illegal. However, if you have an issue with a particular individual animal that is threatening you or your property (e.g. chickens), the local police can be called and are authorized to dispatch the animal from your property,
 ·         The first step for us in solving the raccoon “problem” is to make food unavailable to them on our properties. Actions like locking up your garbage, putting your bird feeders away at night or hanging them on raccoon proof stands, sturdily built chicken coops that prevent raccoons from entering, and not putting pet food outside are simple ways to keep raccoons uninterested in visiting your property. A very good list of how to manage your property and chickens so as to not attract raccoon visits can be found at: http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/human/lww_information/raccoons.html
Corrie and Peter, as DIFW representatives, would like us to take this first step above to see if that will alleviate the problems we are having with raccoons thereby encouraging raccoons to keep to the natural sources of food found on the Island. For example, there is ample food coming in on each tide for raccoons to forage on Peak’s beaches. Meanwhile, they will take our concerns back to their colleagues at DIFW to determine if a raccoon population study for Peaks would be beneficial at this time. They will also monitor the situation to determine if, sometime in the future, a culling program might be necessary.  They also suggested that if anybody has any other concerns or additional questions, to send them to me at brownmichh@aol.com so that I can contact them to report the concern and/or find an answer to your questions.
Thanks to all who asked great questions and provided useful information at the meeting last night, to Carol Eisenberg and Kathleen Hayward who brought this issue up originally for discussion, and all who are willing to find a way to live with the wildlife that is sharing the Island with us.     ---Michelle

Just my two cents on most nuisance animals... it's the opposite of the theme from field of dreams movie (if you build it they will come)  if you offer them food they will come...often!!  if you don't put out food, and your neighbors don't put out food... they will go somewhere else...(usually).

 A reminder from Kathleen Hayward:

Monday, October 27 at 6:30 there will be a community meeting in the MacVane Community Center.

Representatives of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries And Wildlife will attend. There has been much discussion on the PI List about raccoons and theactual and potential danger they pose. It is hoped Islanders will turnout in significant number, similar to the great number of sightings and reports of damage reported at the beginning of the month.

Health Tip of the Week

A Simple Way to Stay Healthy

Hand washing doesn't take much time or effort, but it offers great rewards in terms of preventing illness.  Adopting this simple habit can play a major role in protecting your health.
Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

With Daylight savings time coming soon it's a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. While you are at it, we would love to suggest that you display large visible numbers on your home so that, in the event of an emergency, we can easily locate you.
