***Please remember to let your renters/summer guests know that the same rules/laws that apply in town or at home also apply here on Peaks Island. If you are operating a motorized vehicle--like a golf cart--you MUST possess a valid driver's license. Seat belts are required. Bicycle helmets for children are required. You cannot ride on the side rail or tailgate of a pickup truck. While we encourage you to lock up your bike so it doesn't get "borrowed", you cannot lock your bicycle to the benches in the covered waiting areas. The bikes will be removed and locked to a nearby bicycle rack by DPW.

Yet another reminder that your house number needs to be prominently displayed-there are a very large number of unmarked/poorly marked homes here on the Island. With renters coming in for summer rentals it also helps to put the address next to the phone or with instructions left for renters so that we can find them in the event of an emergency.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or decreased, depriving the brain tissue of oxygen.  It is a leading cause of death in the United States.  Prompt treatment is crucial to minimize brain damage.  Signs and symptoms:

     1.  Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm, or leg.  (Droopy mouth on one side)
     2.  Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.  (Slurred speech)
     3.  Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.  (Blurred vision)
     4.  Sudden dizziness, trouble walking, loss of balance.
     5.  Sudden severe headache.
Call 911

Immediate care at the hospital (within 3 hours of onset) can be life-saving, and minimize potential complications.  Major hospitals now have a fast track to diagnose and treat this condition upon arrival, thus decreasing the dire consequences of the past.

Health Tip of the Week
Eat More Veggies!

You’re healthy, so you’re probably eating the recommended 5 to 9 servings of fruits and veggies a day, right?  Wrong.  A 2009 survey found only 1 in 3 adults ate two or more servings a day and 1 in 4 ate three or more. So have a ‘get-real’ moment and figure how much you’re eating now—then aim to double or triple it. Luckily, it’s a fun (and tasty) goal!  When it comes to veggies, it’s about the size of a baseball. So one serving of veggies could be a half-cup of raw vegetables, one small bell pepper, 12 baby carrots (or two big ones), a cup of leafy greens, or a half-cup of cooked squash.  At any meal, try to eat your veggies first before you get full.

Everyone needs to remember that the freight area for the Ferry at the bottom of Welch St is not meant for foot traffic or passenger pick up while the ferry is docked. If you are standing and waiting to get on the ferry you need to be aware of the forklift and business owners accessing freight at the very end of the dock. Stepping a few feet to the side is not acceptable-you need to get out of the path of the equipment/vehicles-under the covered walkway or the bridge. There is one handicapped parking spot for passenger pickup/drop off marked at the bottom of Welch St. Passengers being picked up can wait on the covered benches or the benches in the open air seating. Once Memorial Day arrives please remember that no vehicle traffic can move past the crosswalk in front of 6 Welch St while the ferry is docked.

***Quick Health Tip***

Get enough sleep.  For most people, that's 7 to 8 hours a night.  This is a staple among tips for a longer life.  If you don't snooze, you lose:  you're at higher risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, impaired concentration, and accidents, not to mention malaise.  New research suggests that sleeping enough may also boost memory.

No liquids or over-the-counter drugs are accepted.  These can be disposed of in household trash if they are diluted or absorbed by coffee grounds, cat litter or dirt, and placed in a container.
It is important to keep such meds away from children, and you will help protect our environment by disposing of them safely.

Health Tip of the Week
Why Should I Get Screened for Colon Cancer?

The most important precaution you can take to prevent colon cancer is to get screened.  Screening can actually find polyps before they become cancer.  Colorectal cancer is 90% treatable when detected early.  Remember the most common symptom is no symptom at all.  Having regular screening tests, beginning at age 50, could save your life!

Health Tip of the Week
Sleep....zzzzzzzz

Most adults need around eight hours of sleep to function at their best. To determine your sleep need, sleep until you wake on your own...without an alarm clock.  Feel alert?  That’s your sleep need.  You can teach yourself to sleep less, but not to need less sleep.

If you call 911 accidentally or if you call and then determine there isn't an emergency, don't just hang up and not answer your phone when you are called back. You need to let the 911 operator know that it was an accidental dial or that the situation isn't an emergency as you had first thought. It will save time and effort trying to locate an emergency if you communicate with the 911 operator...

If you have a dog (or a cat) please remember to put a tag with your contact information on it's collar. We were handed a Golden Retriever puppy today that had no information on it's collar and were lucky enough to be pointed to the folks who were 'dog sitting'. We do not have a facility or kennel for holding dogs here on the Island. If we are unable to locate an owner our option is to send the dog to the Westbrook Animal Refuge League. To save your dog the trauma and you the trip to retrieve your pet, keep your dogs leashed and tagged. If your dog gets loose give us a call and let us know you are searching for it and we can try to help reunite you with your dog. List serve is also a handy option to get the word out for a missing pet as well.

We are very grateful to see that many residents-especially our volunteer firefighters- have been helping to clear the hydrants after each snow storm. Remember to keep your vents and chimneys clear as well as your roofs. While you are out shoveling see if you can see your house number or your neighbor's house number from the road..If you can't readily see it, we may be delayed in an emergency. Make sure you and your neighbors have your houses numbered.
