Health Tip of the Week
Ditch the gym
You don't have to train like an athlete to stay fit this summer.  Just try these outdoor activities for about 30 minutes to burn calories and keep your body toned without hitting the gym.
  • Gardening:  Burn calories while making your yard more beautiful.  Constantly bending and squatting to reach plants is great for your glutes, and your garden will be the envy of your neighbors.  Calories burned: 136 calories
  • Sightseeing:  Out of town and no gym?  See the sights by walking the streets of whichever city or town you’re visiting.  When possible, hit the hills to tighten up your hamstrings and glutes.  Calories burned: 129 calories (3.5 mph pace)
  • Lawn games:  Lawn games like croquet, Bocce, and cornhole don't seem strenuous, but all that crouching down to pick up balls and bean bags helps lift your butt and tone your thighs.  Calories burned: 90
  • Badminton (non-competitive):  Bounding around the badminton court revs up your heart rate, while lunging and stretching for the birdie gives your legs and butt a great workout.  Plus, whacking the shuttlecock with your racket fires up your arm and shoulder muscles.  Calories burned: 150
  • Mowing the lawn:  It may be tempting to pass this chore off to your spouse or your kids, but trimming your lawn torches major calories. Pushing the mower—especially uphill—engages your glute muscles and revs up your heart rate.  Calories burned: 196

Keep your dogs on a leash and hold on to that leash! The Island is full of cars, golf carts, people and many other unpredictable dogs. Even the best behaved dog can get in trouble. With the noise and confusion in congested areas you need to have a firm hold of your dog. There were several incidents of dogs running off, dragging leashes as they went, today when freight was being loaded/unloaded at the bottom of Welch St.

(Harbor Master Kevin Battle was out during the late evening and caught a boat burglar at a marina in town)

***Quick reminder***When going on vacation, put a stop on your mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor pick them up for you.  It's a easy sign that nobody is home when you see a stack of newspapers on the ground and mail falling out of the mailbox.  Those who commit burglaries are looking for the easy targets.
