Yet another reminder that your house number needs to be prominently displayed-there are a very large number of unmarked/poorly marked homes here on the Island. With renters coming in for summer rentals it also helps to put the address next to the phone or with instructions left for renters so that we can find them in the event of an emergency.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or decreased, depriving the brain tissue of oxygen.  It is a leading cause of death in the United States.  Prompt treatment is crucial to minimize brain damage.  Signs and symptoms:

     1.  Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm, or leg.  (Droopy mouth on one side)
     2.  Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.  (Slurred speech)
     3.  Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.  (Blurred vision)
     4.  Sudden dizziness, trouble walking, loss of balance.
     5.  Sudden severe headache.
Call 911

Immediate care at the hospital (within 3 hours of onset) can be life-saving, and minimize potential complications.  Major hospitals now have a fast track to diagnose and treat this condition upon arrival, thus decreasing the dire consequences of the past.
