Health Tip of the Week
Eat Fruit
Eating fruit provides health benefits - people who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Fruits provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of your body.
Still keeping that promise to yourself to eat better this year? Here are some general tips to help you get some fruit into your diet:
  • Keep a bowl of whole fruit on the table, counter, or in the refrigerator.
  • Refrigerate cut-up fruit to store for later.
  • Buy fresh fruits in season when they may be less expensive and at their peak flavor.
  • Buy fruits that are dried, frozen, and canned (in water or 100% juice) as well as fresh, so that you always have a supply on hand.
  • Consider convenience when shopping. Try pre-cut packages of fruit (such as melon or pineapple chunks) for a healthy snack in seconds. Choose packaged fruits that do not have added sugars.

I know that there was an email, on the list-serve today, about dogs being allowed to run at large. These dogs were not accompanied by any owners-they were unattended and running free. I would like to remind all Island residents and visitors that there is a leash law. You cannot have your dog off leash unless you are in a city dog park--and there is not a dog park on Peaks!! We do not have a holding facility on Peaks for dogs. If we cannot reunite you with your dog, the holding facility is at the Westbrook Animal Refuge League. You will not only have to retrieve your pet, you will be summonsed for allowing a dog to run at large. Please keep your dogs on a leash or supervised in your yard. If you see this occurring take the time to give us a call-we cannot take action hours or days later.

    Health Tip of the Week
    Eat More Breakfast
If you eat just a bagel and coffee, you get a quick stimulant from the caffeine and quick energy from the carbs - a recipe for a crash. Instead, go for a mix of unrefined carbs (for fast energy) plus lean protein and healthy fat (which take longer to digest, giving you more staying power.) Think scrambled egg in a whole-grain tortilla or oatmeal topped with nuts.

    Health Tip of the Week

    Get Moving

Not an a.m. exerciser? Rethink your idea of a workout. In a University of Georgia study, people who did a low-intensity aerobic activity (think a leisurely walk) three times a week had a greater reduction in fatigue levels than folks who did higher intensity workouts (like a faster-paced walk with hills) for the same amount of time.

If you tend to drag in the morning or you’re overall exhausted, a tough workout can be more draining than invigorating. “And if you’re not in top shape, a high-intensity workout forces you to expend major energy, leaving your body tired,” says exercise physiologist Michael Bracko, EdD.

Motivation to do some activity: The study found regular exercise generally increased energy levels by 20%.

    Keep the Flu Away!
According to the CDC, there are simple steps you can do to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading the flu:
*Keep your distance from and avoid close contact with people who are sick
*If you are sick, stay at home and keep your distance from other people to prevent spreading the flu virus
*Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and turn your head away from other people when you cough or sneeze
*Wash your hands often to protect yourself from germs and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer often. This is the best tip
*Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth

*To keep your immune system healthy, get enough sleep, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, exercise regularly, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and keep stress levels to the minimum

    Fill Up on Fiber
Starting out the new year on a healthy page? Fiber is powerful medicine. It can help us prevent a host of diseases, including diabetes and heart disease, in addition to helping with weight control. Fit more into your day:
    1. Start with a high fiber breakfast cereal.
    2. Add fruit to every meal.
    3. Fiber up salads and soups with beans, peas and lentils.
    4. Top casseroles or cooked vegetables with bran products for extra crunch.

Will you consider adopting a hydrant?

Here on Peaks it is one Police Officer and one Fire Fighter who clear out all the hydrants.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER 6)- We all know how awful shoveling is after a big storm, but imagine having to shovel over 100 fire hydrants with just two other people.
That's what members of the Portland Fire Department are faced with each storm. The city has about 1,600 hydrants they're responsible for digging out, which means each fire truck or ambulance with a crew of just three is assigned about 120 hydrants each.
It can take the department up to 3 days after a storm to clear all of the hydrants, especially if plows are out for a few days blocking a once-cleared hydrants back in again.
There is a program called "Adopt A Hydrant" in which towns and cities ask their residents to clear out the hydrant near them. That helps these crews that are out doing back-breaking work while still responding to rescue and fire calls.
There's no need to sign up for a hydrant, but departments ask if you do clear one, to shovel at least 3 feet of space all around it to allow plenty of space for a hose to be attached without kinking.

    Facts About Seasonal Flu

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Most people who get the flu will have mild illness, will not need medical care or antiviral drugs, and will recover in less than two weeks. Some people, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in being hospitalized and occasionally result in death. Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections are examples of flu-related complications. The flu also can make chronic health problems worse. For example, people with asthma may experience asthma attacks while they have the flu, and people with chronic congestive heart failure may have worsening of this condition that is triggered by the flu.
The upcoming season's flu vaccine will protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and an influenza B virus.

I spoke with quite a few parents (several from off Island) who were worried and upset about the recent school shooting in CT. In speaking with me a few realized that their kids didn't know who the police officers or firefighters were in their area. We have a great resource here on Peaks and we are happy to accommodate when we can and meet the kids and let them see us in our gear-full turnout gear on a fire fighter--yes I DID just volunteer a fire fighter-feel free to stop by or call us.

As the peak of the holiday gift-buying season approaches and more people are ordering online, UPs and FedEx are busy moving packages to homes throughout the city. Many of these consumers are working when these packages are being dropped on their door step, and these items are left unattended for hours. This is easy picking for wandering thieves. Some thieves follow U.P.S. and FedEx trucks along their routes and nab the gifts, while others simply drive through residential neighborhoods looking for packages.

    Holiday Stress Reality

Most families have challenges, and many families struggle this time of the year trying to live up to an idealized version of the holidays. Here are some suggestions for trying to deal with holiday stress:

Be realistic. If family members or friends have locked horns for most of the year, it is not reasonable to think that on one day all will be forgiven.

Give of yourself. The best gift is not a toy, a trinket or a thing. It is the gift of our presence. It is the gift of our listening. It is the gift of our "being there."

Take care of yourself. We need to take care of our bodies by getting enough exercise and sleep and by eating a healthy diet. We also need to protect our spirit, knowing when to draw a line in the sand and say, "no, thank you for the opportunity but I will not be able to participate." If we give and give, there is nothing left to give.

If you are going away over the Holidays it is a good idea to pick up a timer for your lights. You can "set it and forget it". Having a neighbor pick up your mail or having it held at the Post office is also a smart idea. Lastly, remember that you can stop by the station and let one of us know when you are going out of town and we will keep an extra eye on your home while you are gone.
